The temple is 264 meters east to west and is 200 meters north to south with three prakaras. The temple consists of two lingas which is under worship. There are numerous shrines and is twenty- two "tirthas" or the sacred bathing ghats.
Mythology behind Rameshwaram:
Lord Sri Rama had the honored tradition who has built the temple. After killing Ravana he returned back to India and offered the pilgrimage to Lord Shiva to compensate the sin of killing Ravana. Lord Rama ordered Hanuman to bring one from the Kailasa within the time given. Meanwhile, the sacred hours of installation had arrived and goddess Sita herself prepared it with sand they they prayed that as the lingam of Sri Ramanathswamy. This was the lingam of Sri Ramanatha in the temple.
Known to be the holiest destination of of the country and reaching the place is quite easy. The place has been located at the extreme of South India in Gulf of Munnar and is easily connected by roads, air and rail.
